One of the most frequent technical errors we observe in our Chiang Mai chart lab is the rush to draw diagonal lines connecting any two arbitrary swing points on a chart. Two points can connect to form an infinite number of random trajectories; only a validated third touch proves that market participants are respecting the underlying geometric angle.
The Mechanical Anatomy of a Valid Trendline
In classical price action mechanics, a trendline represents the dynamic speed of money entering or exiting an asset. When you anchor a line from a major swing low (Point A) through a secondary higher low (Point B), this line is merely a tentative hypothesis. Until price approaches the line for a third time (Point C) and demonstrates distinct rejection—characterized by slowing candle bodies and clean wick bounces—the line holds no structural authority.
Here are the three non-negotiable rules we teach in our flagship workshop:
- Rule 1: Distinct Swing Extremes. Point A and Point B must be separated by at least 10 to 15 bars of clear counter-trend progression. If points are clustered too closely, the resulting slope is statistically insignificant.
- Rule 2: Angle Moderation (The 30° to 50° Corridor). Trendlines that climb at angles steeper than 60 degrees reflect unsustainable parabolic momentum and will inevitably break prematurely. Lines shallower than 20 degrees often reflect horizontal consolidation rather than true directional momentum.
- Rule 3: Reaction Velocity at Point C. When price touches the projected line at Point C, the reaction must be decisive. A multi-candle hesitation directly on the line indicates diminishing order flow support.
Common Pitfall: Forcing the Line Through Price Action
Many aspiring chart analysts fall into the cognitive trap of adjusting trendline anchors after price starts cutting through candles, hoping to keep their initial bias alive. If a trendline is repeatedly pierced by candle bodies on the current timeframe, the geometry has broken down. Rather than bending the line, mark the level as compromised and step back to higher timeframe structure.
